When businesses choose an e-commerce platform, the conversation often starts with:
Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento—or something custom?
But the platform itself isn’t the complete solution.
The more important question is:
Can the digital platform support the business as it grows?
Start with business requirements
Technology decisions should come after understanding the business.
Before choosing a platform, I would look at:
- Product complexity
- Customer journey
- Markets and languages
- Integrations
- Payment requirements
- Content requirements
- Internal teams
- Scalability
- Maintenance
- Future roadmap
The right technology is the one that fits the business—not necessarily the one with the longest feature list.
Think beyond the website
A modern e-commerce platform is rarely just a website.
It can involve:
Storefront → CMS → Payments → CRM → ERP → Marketing → Analytics → Shipping → Customer Support
These systems need to work together.
This is where APIs and integrations become critical.
Performance is part of the product
Performance shouldn’t be treated as something to fix after launch.
Page speed, responsive behaviour, image optimization, code quality and infrastructure decisions all influence the customer experience.
A technically impressive platform that feels slow to customers is still a poor digital experience.
Build for change
E-commerce businesses change constantly.
New products.
New markets.
New campaigns.
New integrations.
New customer expectations.
A good platform should therefore be maintainable and adaptable, not just functional on launch day.
My approach
I see digital platform development as a balance between:
Business Goals + Customer Experience + Technology + Delivery
When those four areas are aligned, technology becomes an enabler of growth rather than a limitation.
